On 9 December EULEX Customs Component marks the first anniversary of working in Kosovo. Although the primary role of EULEX Customs Component is to monitor, mentor and advise the local customs service and provide a coherent, professional support, EULEX Customs Officers are the only custom service at Gates 1 and 31. Among their tasks, they have been collecting information on goods passing through the gates and forwarding it to Kosovo and Serbia customs. Trucks entering Kosovo are guided to the Mitrovica terminal to clear for customs duties. The work of EULEX Customs, together with that of the local authorities, has meant around 40 million Euros has been saved by fighting smuggling.
